How To Stay Patient (When You’re Not Successful Yet)

Are you a patient person?

I want to start today’s podcast off with a quote from Leo Tolstoy: “The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.”

I truly believe that patience is what builds greatness. When we pay attention to detail, think long-term, and build up our skills and relationships over time, we become more successful.

Still, patience can be hard. We all want to get results fast. When we start businesses, we want to see profit and impact right away. When we begin relationships, we automatically want things to go smoothly. And when we start a healthy eating plan, we want to see results on day one.

If you don’t have the results that you seek, you may be tempted to rush things and try to succeed as fast as possible.

Whatever you do, don’t do this.

Rushing leads to mistakes, oversight, or missing better ways to do things.

Instead, take a deep breath and prepare your heart and mind for patience. If you don’t see the results you seek, don’t give up (but also, don’t expect them to magically appear). You have to work at it. Success rarely happens overnight. It takes time. So, how do we prepare ourselves for patience during the waiting?

“Patience is what builds greatness!” @lewishowes

In this 5-Minute Friday, I want to give you a few ways to stay patient when you aren’t successful yet.

#1. Look at your trajectory. Take a look in the mirror and ask: If I keep up my current actions, habits, and daily growth, will I succeed at some point? If it’s “no,” then something needs to change. Maybe you need to stop binging TV and instead start exercising! Or perhaps, it’s time to invest in a coach instead of trying to figure out everything for yourself. But if your answer is a “yes,” then you’re good to keep going!

#2. Find little wins. Maybe you conquered a fear or improved on one of your shortcomings. You started exercising, eating better, and investing in healthy friendships. These are all amazing things, and they deserve to be celebrated. Little wins can keep you motivated when you haven’t yet achieved your biggest goals.

#3. Enjoy the present process. Embrace the day-to-day grind, so you don’t feel the need to succeed as fast as possible. We often think that happiness lies at the end of success, but this isn’t true. In fact, find happiness before success, and you’ll be much happier after as well.

These three tips will help you increase your patience, even when you aren’t successful yet! And here’s a reminder — stay patient and humble even once you’ve found success. I think this quote sums it up best:

“Two things define you: your patience when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything.”
