Three Simple Breathing Habits to Reset Your Mind

I want to start this 5-Minute Friday with this quote from Dan Brule: “Breath is the link between the mind and body.”

We don’t normally go throughout the day thinking about our breath, but what if we did? What if we took one moment each day to just sit and breathe deep?

Friends, breathing is actually the number one way to give your mind a RESET. When you’re nervous, stressed out, feeling overwhelmed, or catching yourself overthinking something, breathing exercises can help you get back to calm and control.

When you have power over your breath, you can steer your energy. Feeling stressed? Take a moment to breathe and focus on recentering energy. Feeling angry? Take some moments to slow down and meditate while focusing on your breathing. Feeling joyful? Set aside time to really sit in gratitude and happiness and focus on your breath!

Even though breath is so powerful, it’s one of those topics that people love to over-complicate. That’s why I want to share with you today three very simple breathing habits and tools.

“We’re breathing all the time, but we rarely pay attention to our breathing.” @lewishowes

You can try them out LIVE as you listen or read along, but my hope is that you go ahead and implement at least one of these habits in your daily life.

#1: Bring awareness to your breath.

We’re breathing all the time, but we rarely pay any attention to it.

By taking a moment to bring your awareness to your breath — just as it is — you can get out of your head and into the present moment. Take a few seconds right now to just focus on your breath — how does it feel? Does it feel tight or quick?

This habit is great for when you catch yourself over-analyzing things. Just turn your focus to your breath, and temporarily let go of everything else.

#2: Focus on and lengthen your exhale

My high-performance coach, Doc Trish, says, “Trust your exhale.”

She’s taught me that the exhale is just as important, if not MORE important, than your inhale.

So in this breathing exercise, try to focus on your exhale and lengthen it. Draw it out. Doing this will slow down your heart rate and can bring you into a calm state.

And by the way, friends, Trish is the head coach of my brand new Greatness Coaching program — so we’ll be dropping a link to Greatness Coaching in the show notes if you’d like to learn more!

#3: Use a deliberate sigh

This exercise involves breathing with a double intake, and an extended exhale. Doing this exercise for just two or three cycles can steer you into calm. Dr. Andrew Huberman, who I interviewed recently, studies this very exercise at Stanford University — and it’s proven to work wonders for athletes, entrepreneurs, and basically anyone who tries it.

So there you have it! The three simple breathing tools to reset your mind on cue! These breathing habits will be a game-changer for your focus, stress levels, health, energy, and nervous system. I’m telling you, the power of breathing can change your life!
