Become an Accidental Apprentice

Stop searching for the perfect mentor.

In every leadership conference I’ve ever attended, there’s been a common theme: Always have a mentor.

We usually think of a mentor as someone older, wiser, and who has gone through similar things that we have. There might be a few people who fit this bill for you, but the process of finding a mentor can get complicated. We begin thinking that we have to find “the perfect mentor” — the perfect person to point us towards greatness.

How many of you have invested time as an “apprentice” under a mentor, only to have it fizzle out in the end? Why is finding the perfect mentor so hard?

The truth is, we need more than just one mentor. We need a lot of mentors. Through life, we go through so many different changes and experiences. We need more than just one person speaking in our lives.

Personally, I can’t count the number of mentors I have right now. The funny thing is that a lot of the relationships didn’t even begin as mentorships. Just by doing life, you learn from people. You are being mentored 24/7 whether you know it or not.

For this 5-Minute Friday episode, I wanted to share an interview clip with author Jeff Goins about how to embrace “accidental apprenticeships.”

“Acknowledge the people around you right now and how you can get the most out of them.” @JeffGoins

Jeff Goins is a popular blogger and the best selling author of five books, includingThe Art of Work and Real Artists Don’t Starve. On his blog, Jeff likes to share his thoughts and tips on writing, life, and creative work.

Jeff agrees that everyone be mentored, but he doesn’t believe that everyone has some sort of “soulmate mentor.” Usually, we are mentored by not just one person but several, and sometimes, we aren’t even aware of it!

Jeff says that there’s no such thing as a “self-made person.” Each person has been shaped by the people around them. I can attest to that.

If you want to check out the full interview with Jeff, listen to Episode 160 to learn how to try new things, listen to your mentors, and find your purpose.

Are you tired looking for the “perfect mentor?” It’s exhausting. Instead, let’s use every opportunity to intentionally engage in lessons that you can learn from other people. Join me on Episode 945 with Jeff Goins to learn how!
